This week we spoke to one of our own alinea people, Jamie, on his experience as an apprentice and working with us:
What’s your favourite thing about being an apprentice at alinea?
Being able to get a head start by gaining experience in the industry whilst still studying is invaluable. Working with alinea has given me the opportunity to work on some truly amazing projects around London, whilst being surrounded by a great network of incredible people who are always willing to help me out. The Graduate Knowledge Forum at alinea is a great way for me to get involved with graduates and other apprentices to share knowledge and advice with each other, helping towards not only my degree but also my APC.
What made you interested in being a QS?
I’ve always been intrigued by the built environment, especially in London. Originally I had planned to be an accountant thanks to doing well in maths at school (and a love for excel). However, after stumbling across quantity surveying as a career, I realised that not only did it fit my skillset, but also my interests. I then did a one-week work experience placement with alinea before my A-Levels and knew instantly that it was what I wanted to do, and the company I wanted to work for!
What is it like managing your work alongside your studies at Westminster?
Initially, the idea of balancing a full-time job whilst also studying part-time was daunting. alinea has provided me with incredible support around managing my workload and organising my time, whilst frequently checking in to make sure I’m coping with work and offering support for my mental wellbeing too. Not only am I supported by alinea, but Westminster too. The apprenticeships team at Westminster offer support and guidance whilst arranging reviews with a representative from Westminster and my line manager to help keep me on track and ensure I’m progressing towards goals and also getting time to study.
