The Big Plastic Count

This week our team will be joining thousands of people across the UK in The Big Plastic Count (16-22 May). The bigger the count the stronger the evidence and need for change!

So why are we doing this?

Approximately 73% of beach litter worldwide is plastic. In the UK alone it is estimated that five million tonnes of plastic is used every year, nearly a half of which is on packaging. Second to the US we have the biggest plastic consumption per person. Estimates for how long plastic endures range from 450 years to forever.

What are we hoping to achieve?

This year the government is looking to start deciding legal targets for reducing plastic waste, at the moment there isn’t enough information on how much leaves UK households, schools, care facilities and workplaces and even less on what happens to it.  The goal of this campaign is to convince the government to set a ambitious targets to reduce single use plastic by 50% by 2025.
