A Summer Placement is an excellent way to gain valuable insight into the world of work and experience a professional environment. It offers hands-on, practical experience and provides reassurance about chosen career paths, or allows redirection where appropriate.
At Turner & Townsend alinea, we believe in nurturing the younger generation to ensure they are equipped with all the tools and knowledge they need to make clear, confident decisions about their future.
We are currently hosting three work experience students who are halfway through their 6-week placements. Here’s what they said about their time so far.
Charlie, University of Reading:
“I’ve loved my first few weeks here at Turner & Townsend alinea. The placement has been a great opportunity for me to gain experience and learn more about the industry from the very best.
I’m currently working on the New Zealand House project, it’s such an exciting and unique project which I am very proud to be a part of.
I am currently studying Quantity Surveying at University and am about to enter my third and final year of studies. Undertaking the placement has definitely reassured me that I’m going down the right path. I’m really enjoying the placement so far and I’m excited to see what the next few weeks have in store.”
Alysha, University of Reading:
“The past three weeks interning as a Quantity Surveyor in Turner and Townsend alinea’s MEP team have been a whirlwind and I have learnt a lot. Working closely with my line manager, I’ve had the chance to take part in informative site walks where accurate valuations are undertaken, and I have gained hands-on experience in the art of negotiating terms with contractors. This has given me a real feel for the world of cost consultancy. Moreover, diving into CostX to obtain meticulous measurements on Stage 4 projects has really deepened my understanding on how quantifying mechanical and electrical equipment for spot-on project costing works.
The internship has been a bridge between theory and practice, with thanks in large part to the incredible guidance from my line manager, Sercan, as well as supportive and helpful colleagues. With only a few weeks remaining of my Turner & Townsend alinea internship, I am genuinely looking forward to the challenges ahead. I am excited to continue my professional growth as I delve deeper into the world of cost consultancy.”
Finley, Nottingham Trent University:
“I have learnt a lot so far in my first few weeks of work experience at Turner & Townsend alinea. Some of the tasks I’ve had the chance to take on include: measuring on CostX using the training I was given, looking at different drawings of different stages, working on Excel spreadsheets and sitting in on meetings to help complete a PTE.
I’m really enjoying the placement as I’m gaining a lot of valuable experience through helping on projects and sitting in on meetings. In addition to this, the people I have met during my placement at the company have been very welcoming and friendly which makes it a nice environment to work in.
I already had an interest in entering the construction industry and the summer placement has made me more inclined to follow this career path. I’m excited to see where things take me!”
